【Shanghai】Dance Drama ‘Return from Dunhuang’

In the fifth year of Dazhong in the Tang Dynasty (851 AD), Chang’an welcomed a messenger delegation from afar. The map of Shazhou (Dunhuang) presented by Yaya Gao Jinda brought good news for the Shazhou city that had been ‘lost contact’ for more than half a century. According to historical records, the messenger delegation set out in the second year of Dazhong (848 AD), disguised, detoured around the northern desert, and endured numerous hardships. In the nearly four-year long journey back home, the Dunhuang messenger delegation closely connected home and country with their lives… The dance drama ‘Return from Dunhuang’ fills the historical gaps with artistic imagination, allowing the connotations and spirits carried by Dunhuang culture to resonate emotionally through vivid characters. This production is funded by the special fund for the development of propaganda and cultural undertakings in Guangming District, Shenzhen. It is commissioned by the 23rd China Shanghai International Arts Festival and selected into the key creation catalogue of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles in 2024. All the plots in the play occur on the long journey back starting from Dunhuang. The messenger delegation has endured the tests of life and death. Behind them are the bright lights guarded by countless Dunhuang people with their beliefs. The lights of thousands of households extend the longing for home passed down through generations. Opening hours: Open on Saturday, October 19 from 19:30 to 21:10; open on October 20 from 14:00 to 15:40. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
