23rd China Shanghai International Arts Festival: Beijing People’s Art Theatre’s ‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’

In 1944, World War II had not yet ended, and on the warship USS Caine, the ‘Caine Mutiny’ incident occurred, shocking the United States Navy… The novel ‘The Caine Mutiny’ describes the court-martial trial process of the Caine incident. Soon after, author Herman Wouk adapted his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel into the play ‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,’ which caused a sensation on Broadway in New York and throughout Europe and America after its premiere. In 1988, this play was translated into Chinese by Ying Ruocheng, and the Beijing People’s Art Theatre invited the famous American artist Charlton Heston to direct the play. Through successful cooperation between China and the United States, the complete process of the military court trial was artistically presented. The 2006 revised edition was artistically directed by Zhu Xu, the veteran artist who played Captain Queeg in the original production, and featured the participation of many outstanding actors such as Feng Yuanzheng and Wu Gang. The play’s subtle and witty portrayal of human nature and dramatic content rely entirely on language, demonstrating a solid foundation. The entire play features no female roles, with an all-male cast, showcasing the masculinity of the military and offering a powerful stage presence. The performance is open from October 20th to October 22nd, approximately 159 minutes long (including a 15-minute intermission), subject to actual conditions on site.
