Head to Macau for an exhilarating winter experience! Let’s first delve into the city of Macau, a place that cannot be simply described in a few words. This city possesses two distinct faces: one of opulence and hustle, evident in its luxurious hotels and surrounding residential areas, while at its core, it preserves a complete collection of ancient and European-style architecture. Like most tourist cities, you’ll encounter more tourists speaking Mandarin and various foreign languages on the streets, sometimes forgetting that Cantonese is the main language here. Although Macau is not vast, it boasts numerous famous tourist attractions. For instance, the Macau Peninsula is home to many historical buildings; Taipa Island gathers a multitude of luxury hotels and shopping centers; Coloane Island is a quiet, leisurely, and artistically fresh small village. Allow me to share how Macau’s winter is full of excitement. Excitement One | Macau Food Festival: Macau’s winter hosts an annual gastronomic feast—the Macau Food Festival, a paradise for food enthusiasts, and I am utterly delighted! Let me introduce you to the Macau Food Festival, an annual gastronomic carnival held in Macau since the end of 2001. The scale of the festival has been expanding, with the food initially focusing on local cuisine but now has become internationally participatory, evolving from a pure food festival to a food carnival. This year’s Macau Food Festival is a global gastronomic feast, gathering nearly a hundred local characteristic dining shops in Macau, featuring five major food streets: Chinese Restaurant Street, European Food Street, Asian Food Street, Flavor Food Street, and Dessert Street, with a Japanese Food Street located in the lower level of Xiwan Lake. While girls may consider dieting for beauty, at the Macau Food Festival, I can’t worry about that. The scale of the Macau Food Festival is enormous, with a vast variety of food that’s too numerous to count, and you can taste the world’s specialty cuisines without leaving the country. In addition to eye-catching Indian flying pancakes in various flavors such as onion, banana, durian, mango, and pineapple, there are also Asian, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Singaporean, and more. Isn’t that an overwhelming sense of happiness? The food carnival not only offers a rich and diverse food culture but also features artistic performances and lottery activities. The most common sights are couples and parents with their children. At the Macau Food Festival venue, you will find multiple locations equipped with alcohol-based hand sanitizers, with staff strictly wearing masks and gloves. Visitors must show their health code and have their temperature taken by the staff. The dining area is set with four-person dining tables at a safe distance of one meter apart, with table partitions, demonstrating that the on-site epidemic prevention work is really attentive.
The West Bay Lake Square in Macau boasts the iconic Macau Tower, a landmark that defines the region. The Macau Tower, together with the surrounding West Bay Lake and South Bay Lake, form a stunning scenic area known as ‘Two Lakes and One Tower’. Here, you can enjoy the view, savor the local cuisine, and revel in the lifestyle.
Thrilling Event II | Macau Grand Prix: In Macau, you can witness high-speed racing cars and super cool drivers on the track. This was my first time watching a car race, and I was amazed at how fast the cars were – so fast that you could barely make out their shapes. The Macau Grand Prix is an annual Gran Prix racing event held from the third Thursday to Sunday in November. It is the oldest street racing event in history and the only one in the world that features both car and motorcycle races. During the carnival-like atmosphere of the race, drivers meet on high-speed straights and navigate tight, sharp turns. The narrowest part of the track is only 7 meters wide, making it one of the most challenging tracks in the world. This racing feast attracts countless spectators every year, including top-tier drivers and racing enthusiasts. Even newcomers can be seen at the Macau Grand Prix.
Thrilling Event III | Macau Winter Carnival: Winter calls for snow, and in November in Macau, you can play in real snow! Surprised? The third Macau Winter Carnival takes place from November 12th to December 27th on the Observation Tower Street (next to the Macau Tower). The event immerses us in the only outdoor real-snow playground in Macau, and it also features a cultural and creative photo area, a children’s wonderland, and a game area with stalls, making it incredibly fun! As a girl from the north, I am no stranger to snow, but many of my southern friends get very excited when they talk about snow. Come to the Macau Winter Carnival and fully enjoy the joy of the icy world.
Thrilling Event IV | teamLab SuperNature: There is a ‘body-immersive art museum’ in Macau that you must not miss for a visual feast! teamLab SuperNature is created by the art collective teamLab and consists of a complex, three-dimensional interactive space with towering works up to 8 meters high, covering an area of 5000 square meters with varying levels. The endless crystal universe allows me to understand the space from an artistic perspective; the valley of flowers and people, with multiple seasons changing within the work, lets me search for loss, immersion, and rebirth; the sculpture of light, by gathering light on a plane, rebuilds space and forms three-dimensional sculptures. This art museum is a visual feast of artistic creativity and is also a showcase of works that explore the relationship between humans and nature and offer new insights into the world.
The giant group of conceptual works allows you to immerse your body in them, integrate with the works, and perceive the charm of art. Travel and epidemic prevention guidelines to note when coming to Macau. Macau has done a great job in epidemic prevention and control. Therefore, many activities have been held in November, and more activities will be launched one after another in the future. Macau is now a very safe tourist destination! Mainland residents need to present Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao when going to Macau. Moreover, the permit endorsement must be within the validity period. Remember to apply for the endorsement at the entry-exit office in advance. Now individual travel to Macau has been resumed across the country. Therefore, various provinces and cities have also long opened the handling of Macau tourism endorsements. Entering Macau is very simple and convenient. After getting the endorsement, you only need to provide a nucleic acid test report within 7 days and the local health code. In Macau, Hong Kong dollars and Macau patacas are both in common use. They are mainly used when taking taxis and eating snacks. Almost all consumption places conduct accounting at a ratio of 1:1. Some stores also accept Renminbi and settle at a ratio of 1:1:1. Therefore, it is more cost-effective to exchange Renminbi for Macau patacas before coming to Macau. For other aspects such as staying in hotels/shopping/restaurants, etc., almost all can be paid online or by card. In addition, while enjoying the trip, you still need to wear a mask and take good protection. It is recommended to follow the official public account of the Macau Tourism Bureau to understand various latest tourism policies. There are also preferential benefits such as hotel consumption vouchers in ‘Discover Macau’.
