The Bund’s Exposition of International Architecture is located on the west bank of the Pujiang River. Starting from Waibaidu Bridge in the north and reaching Jinling East Road in the south, on the street about 1800 meters long, 52 historical buildings with different styles and strong exotic colors are lined up in a row, becoming one of the major attractions of the Bund. From here, you can catch a glimpse of the century-long historical changes of Shanghai. Since Shanghai was opened as a commercial port in the 1840s, the Bund has become the political, financial, business and cultural center of foreign powers in Shanghai. Foreign banks, commercial firms and clubs are gathered here. Strolling on Zhongshan East 1st Road, you will see various historical buildings of different styles such as the Customs House, the south and north buildings of Peace Hotel, the former HSBC building, the Asia Building, Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Yau Lee Building, etc. The combined Gothic spires, Baroque colonnades, Spanish balconies and ancient Greek domes are all in full view, as if traveling to an exotic street in the last century. At night, when the lights are brightly lit, it is even more pleasing to the eye. Most of the buildings have now been converted into business office buildings such as the headquarters of China Pacific Insurance Company, the Consulate General of Thailand in Shanghai, the Shanghai headquarters of China Merchants Group, the headquarters of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, Shanghai Customs, Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions, Shanghai Foreign Exchange Trading Center, etc., and are not open to the public. Some buildings have also become consumption centers. For example, the well-known No. 18 on the Bund was originally the headquarters of the Standard Chartered Bank in China. The first and second floors are flagship stores of many internationally renowned brands such as Cartier. Upstairs are the ‘Bund 18 Creative Center’, the Cantonese restaurant ‘Tan Wai Lou’, a Michelin three-star chef restaurant, and an open-air river-view bar. It is a must-visit place to enjoy Shanghai’s nightlife. Open all year round and open all day.
