Huaihai Road: A Fashionable Shopping Destination in Shanghai

Huaihai Road is a renowned commercial street in Shanghai, rivaling the popularity of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. It is divided into three sections: East Huaihai Road, West Huaihai Road, and the bustling Middle Huaihai Road, which is known as the ‘Oriental Champs-Élysées’ for its numerous department stores and vibrant atmosphere. Strolling along the neon-lit streets at night allows you to experience the unique fashion vibe of this dynamic city. Unlike Nanjing Road, which symbolizes the commercial history of Shanghai, Huaihai Road exudes modernity and style. Here, you can find large department stores, trendy boutiques, specialty shops, and a variety of restaurants and cafes. Huaihai Road offers a complete shopping and dining experience, with green spaces for rest and movie theaters for entertainment. The eastern section of Middle Huaihai Road (from South Tibet Road to South Chongqing Road) is home to many office buildings, including Pacific Department Store Huaihai, Shanghai Times Square, Hong Kong Plaza, and Shanghai Plaza, as well as computer malls like Baiyin and Saibo. It is only 400 meters north to People’s Square and a 300-meter walk south to famous attractions like the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party and Xintiandi. The middle section of Middle Huaihai Road (from South Shaanxi Road to South Chongqing Road) is a concentration of department stores such as Parkson, Paris Spring, Two Hundred Yongxin, and Huating Isetan, offering a wide range of fashionable goods and branded clothing. Additionally, there are stores like the Shanghai Women’s Products Store, Gujin Bra Company, and the National Local Specialties Food Company, along with many high-end brand boutiques and flagship stores. For shopping enthusiasts, this section is the main attraction, accessible via Subway Lines 1 and 10 to South Shaanxi Road Station. From the western section of Middle Huaihai Road (west of South Shaanxi Road) to West Huaihai Road, the commercial atmosphere fades, replaced by residential communities and old villas, with attractions like the Shanghai Library. East Huaihai Road is relatively short but connects to Renmin Road, and it’s not far to walk to the Chenghuang Temple tourist area, approximately 15-20 minutes away. Huaihai Road is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
