The Shanghai Public Security Museum, located on Ruijin South Road, is the first museum in China dedicated to public security topics. It documents over a century of historical evolution since the establishment of police institutions in Shanghai in 1854. Visitors can explore various criminal investigation materials, case photos, and police equipment. It is an excellent place to bring children and broaden their knowledge. Particularly attractive to young people are the famous firearms from around the world, including guns used by notable figures such as Sun Yat-sen, making it a must-see attraction. The museum spans seven floors, with the first to fourth floors serving as the main exhibition areas, displaying all regular exhibits. The first floor showcases police vehicles from different eras and three groups of sculptures reflecting public security themes. The second floor is dedicated to the history of public security in Shanghai, displaying various police badges, uniforms, medals, and wax figures of Indian, British, and Chinese police officers from old Shanghai. The third floor houses the Criminal Investigation Pavilion, Public Security Pavilion, Traffic Pavilion, and Detention Pavilion, displaying images from several major homicide cases; visitors who may find this content disturbing are advised to skip these areas. Additionally, one can view many confiscated tools and firearms. The fourth floor features the Firefighting Pavilion, Equipment Pavilion, Heroes Pavilion, and International Police Exchange Pavilion, highlighting the professional functions and international exchanges of various police forces. The museum’s ‘World Famous Firearms Exhibition’ houses over two hundred guns, including rifles, submachine guns, and machine guns made in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Russia, and more than ten other countries. It also includes special-use firearms like curved-shot guns, knife guns, pen guns, and poison bullet guns. The museum’s treasure is a personal defense gun once used by Mr. Sun Yat-sen. Additionally, firearms used by notorious figures from old Shanghai, such as the Green Gang leaders Du Yuesheng and Huang Jinrong, are also on display and are quite precious. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:30; the museum is closed all day on Mondays, with special notices for national holidays.
