Chongming Island National Geopark

Chongming Island is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, facing the urban area of Shanghai across the river. It is the third largest island in China, with abundant geological relics and tidal flat landscape features visible on the island. The island itself is a large geopark. Therefore, the scope of Chongming Island National Geopark covers the entire Chongming Island, where you can visit the Dongtan Wetland Park to watch the sunrise and observe migratory birds, enjoy the sunset at the XiSha Wetland Park, or spend time with family camping and cycling in the Dongping National Forest Park, enjoying various leisure activities away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Chongming Island lacks high-rise buildings; it offers more rural areas and fields, along with fresh air and the refreshing fragrance of plants, making it an ideal place for weekend vacations. At the northwest end of the island, there are XiSha Wetland and Mingzhu Lake Park. XiSha Wetland is a great place to watch the sunset, and from the riverbank, one can overlook the passing ships on the Yangtze River. Autumn and winter are good seasons for bird-watching. Mingzhu Lake, adjacent to XiSha Wetland, is an ideal place for cycling around the lake and taking a leisurely walk. At the eastern end of the island lies Dongtan Wetland Park, facing the sea, making it an excellent spot for sunrise viewing and bird-watching. In the middle of the island, Dongping National Forest Park boasts lush forests where you can cycle, play paintball, go grass skiing, barbecue, and camp, suitable for outings with family and friends. There are also many agritourism spots on Chongming Island, where you can enjoy farmhouse meals, go fishing, and pick seasonal fruits. You can also opt for a different travel experience by cycling around the island, getting close to nature and promoting environmental protection, with ‘One Meter Bicycles’ rental points available at the main scenic spots on the island. Chengqiao Town in the south of Chongming Island is a more bustling area with notable attractions such as Chongming Academy (Chongming Museum) and Yingzhou Park, as well as various hotels, restaurants, and guesthouses. A visit to Chongming Island usually takes 1-2 days. It is convenient to travel by bus, boat, or private car, although the journey time is relatively long. Therefore, for a one-day trip to Chongming, it is recommended to drive yourself or join a tour group. Driving from the city to the island’s attractions takes about two hours. Opening hours are from 08:30 to 16:00 Monday to Friday, and 08:30 to 16:30 on weekends throughout the year.
