On the path of artistic pursuit, Yang Liping is insatiable. Even after possessing the form and spirit of the peacock, she is not content; she wants to tell a richer and more profound story about ‘Peacock’. Thus, in 2012, the dance drama ‘Peacock’ was born, receiving rave reviews and drawing large audiences. Ten years later, the 2022 version of the dance drama ‘Peacock’ has been re-launched with a new stage format, meticulously refined and improved. The first national tour in 2022, spanning 12 cities with 50 performances, sold out every show and created a ‘Peacock’ craze across the country. From 2023 to 2024, ‘Peacock’ will spread its wings again, visiting over 40 cities including Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai, presenting over 200 performances and bringing an unforgettable feast for the eyes and soul to audiences everywhere! The story of ‘Peacock’ revolves around two eternal themes: life and love, using stage form to portray the common emotions of humanity and conveying the artist’s personal growth, thoughts, and insights into art and life to the audience. The ‘peacock’ in the drama is both a bird and a person, representing the sentient beings of the emotional world. The drama is divided into four chapters—Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter—telling a story about growth, humanity, life, and love, as well as the interconnection between life and nature. Through the stage art form, it presents a benevolent exploration of the world and an inquiry into life and humanity, reflecting the humanistic sentiment where life and art blend. In the 2022 version of ‘Peacock,’ more Eastern aesthetics are integrated into stage art creation. Yang Liping positions herself as a ‘convener,’ allowing more young dancers to take the lead roles and discover their own energy on stage, ensuring each dancer has their own characteristics. ‘I have seen a great spirit and physical condition in the actors of this version, whether they are playing peacocks or crows, they fit their roles very well,’ says Yang Liping.
