Shikumen, a residential architecture with distinctive Shanghai characteristics, is predominantly found in the old alleys of Shanghai. These buildings extensively incorporate the styles of Jiangnan residences, featuring stone door frames and solid black lacquered thick wooden doors, hence the name ‘Shikumen’. Shikumen architecture in Shanghai is mainly concentrated in the Huangpu and Jing’an districts. The Shikumen at Lane 96, Shaoxing Road, is one of the well-preserved examples in the city. Many films and television series depicting old Shanghai are fond of using this location for exterior shots. The residents here are accustomed to the limelight, and they remain composed and unruffled when they see cameras being carried around in the alleyways, as if the cultural essence of Shaoxing Road has permeated their very being. Open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
