Synopsis: During the middle Tang Dynasty, there was separatist rule by regional military governors and eunuchs held excessive power. Yuan Zhen, a ‘talented scholar’ who was highly controversial, had been prime minister for less than three months when he was accused of forming cliques for personal gain and assassinating political opponents. The court and the common people were outraged. The Tang emperor ordered a joint trial by three departments for the assassination case. At a time of great peril, Yuan Zhen went alone to his deserted old residence to keep an appointment after the curfew. Waiting there was his close friend – Bai Juyi. From being a talented young man indulging in poetry and wine to now a high-ranking official with great power; from being inseparable close friends to now being strangers. Life is like a dream.
