Xinhua Road: A Tranquil Boulevard with International Architectural Charm

Xinhua Road, originally known as ‘Avenue Amherest’, is lined with towering trees that cast dappled shadows where sunlight filters through the foliage, creating a serene atmosphere. Known as the ‘All Nations Alley’, it boasts dozens of garden residences with diverse international architectural styles. Hungarian master architect, Laszlo Hudec, designed these houses in the 1930s, a time when he was already renowned in Shanghai for his designs of the Grand Cinema and the Park Hotel. At 36, Lane 329, stands the ‘Cake House’ designed by Hudec, featuring a blue roof that resembles a fairy tale. Next door at 32B, Lane 329, is the former Swedish Consulate, with its steep double-sloped red roof making it distinctive among the nearby villas. No. 315 Xinhua Road is a Georgian-style English villa, once the residence of Sheng Chongyi. Today, Xinhua Road is still adorned with lush sycamore trees whose shadows play upon the unique architecture. There is no hustle and bustle of traffic, allowing visitors to slowly soak in the historical ambiance of this street. It is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
