Nanxiang Tan Garden

Tan Garden, a private garden of Li Liufang, a famous literary figure of the Ming Dynasty and one of the ‘Four Gentlemen of Jiading’, features a compact and well-proportioned layout. The garden is centered around a gourd-shaped pond with halls surrounding it. The winding caves and twisting paths create a connected network of corridors, showcasing the characteristics of Jiangnan private gardens. It achieves a garden effect where the corridor follows the bridge, and the scenery changes with every step, providing an immersive experience as if walking through a painting. The design of Tan Garden employs a method of layering obstructions and permeations to create a visually winding and elusive effect. Centered around the water feature, it uses a ‘one center, multi-extension’ pattern, separated from the bustling city by high walls. The garden integrates landscape, architecture, and plants in a natural style, maximizing the ‘small yet grand’ artistic principle within its limited space, creating a garden layout of ‘a small forest within a short distance, with various beautiful scenes’. Located in the town center of Nanxiang, the garden is surrounded by famous attractions such as the Nanxiang Old Street, Yunxiang Temple, Guyi Garden, Nanxiang Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall, Old Street Book Field, and Old Street Boat Tours. The garden is open from January 1st to September 25th from 09:00 to 17:00, and from October 1st to December 31st from 09:00 to 17:00.
