Jing’an Villas: A Glimpse into Shanghai’s Past

Welcome to Jing’an Villas, a complex of modern-style lane houses in Shanghai, built in 1932 by the developer Zhang Tanru. This place was once the site of the Chaozhou Guild Hall and housed stables for the British to keep horses. It has also been home to notable figures such as Cai Yuanpei, Kong Xiangxi, and Yu Youren. Apart from one building classified as a general historical building, the rest are all protected historical structures. This area can be considered a microcosm of Shanghai’s residential architecture, with a certain level of representativeness. Today, it preserves 183 houses. After decades of change, the former glamour of this place has long faded. Each house on the first floor has a courtyard of about ten square meters. When looking up at the sky, one can still see the well-preserved wall reliefs, small Western-style balconies, and black cast-iron window bars. The spacious public spaces between the buildings are lush with greenery, making them ideal settings for cafes, galleries, and other lifestyle venues. Coffee, milk tea, and small wontons allow visitors to enjoy the taste while experiencing the charm of old Shanghai. Open all year round, accessible 24/7.
