In the courtyard of Shanghai Institute of Biological Products at No. 1262 West Yan’an Road, there is a garden villa with unique style and pleasant scenery. It was once the former residence of Sun Ke, the son of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. In the past, this villa was No. 22 Columbia Road (now No. 60 Panyu Road). Nowadays, this gate has been sealed and can only be accessed from West Yan’an Road. Sun Ke’s residence covers an area of about 8,000 square meters, and the current building area is 1,000 square meters. The main building is of Spanish style and also has Baroque architectural style. Its sloping roof is paved with red tubular tiles. The details of the eaves are exquisitely decorated. The door and window frames are in various forms and use various arch forms. The chimney on top of the fireplace is similar to the practice of the Italian Renaissance. The exterior facade is simple and bright, and also has the style and grandeur of Western modernist architecture. These are the common features of buildings constructed in Shanghai since the 1920s and 1930s. In front of the house is a typical spacious Chinese garden. Various precious trees are planted around it, forming a thick shade. The grass is laid in the middle of the courtyard, and a pool is arranged with lakeside stone revetments, presenting a pleasant scenery. This building was designed by Hudec. The indoor wooden staircase is exquisitely made. The floors of bedrooms, living rooms, and study rooms are all paved with imported teak slats in a mat pattern. The platforms and balconies are very spacious. The cast iron hollow railings are light and beautiful. Standing on the balcony and looking around at the garden scenery is also a sweet enjoyment. This luxurious building was probably built in the 1930s. Opening hours: From July 9 to August 3, 10:00 – 17:00. It is open during the exhibition period with limited hours.
