The Sinan Open-Air Museum naturally gathers old houses with a century-long history of Shanghai, comprising 51 independent-style garden houses, including row-style garden houses, townhouses, veranda-style buildings, modern lane houses, garden alleys, and modern apartments, showcasing a variety of architectural styles. It offers a panorama of the residential architecture in modern Shanghai, imbued with a sense of a hundred years of history. This museum is unique; it has no walls, no glass display cases, no railings, and no designated viewing lines. Every visitor is invited to approach the exhibits, touch them, and experience the warmth and coolness shaped by time, stepping into a century of humanistic history. The exhibits of the Sinan Open-Air Museum include old houses, street lamps, ancient trees, red brick paths, and cobblestone walls. Each exhibit’s exterior wall features a shield-shaped sign with a unique QR code. Every visitor’s smartphone acts as the museum’s audio guide and navigator; by scanning the QR code, visitors can listen to audio descriptions about the exhibit, such as ‘The Story of Literati and Generals’ and ‘The Empress Dowager and the Sycamore Tree’. The opening hours and business status are subject to the daily operation.
