There are many temples in Macau. Among them, there is only one Beidi Temple in Taipa that is dedicated to Zhenwu Emperor. The whole view of Beidi Temple is solemn and majestic. In addition to colorful murals painted on the rafters and eaves arches of the main entrance, there are also carved decorations. The workmanship is fine, the shapes are vivid and lifelike. The couplets on both sides are: ‘Beizong Tianzhu, majestic in Zhenglonghuan Sansha, revered for the holy virtue; extremely occupying the imperial throne, gracefully benefiting Yugang all over the world, praising the meritorious service.’ They praise the divine achievements of Beidi. It is worth noting that the two words ‘Longhuan’ mentioned in the couplets, like the word ‘Tanzao’ engraved on an ancient iron bell in the temple, are both old names of Taipa more than two hundred years ago. Beidi is also known as the Xuanwu Emperor. Legend has it that he governs the north and is also the god of water. The tradition of celebrating Beidi’s birthday on April 11 every year continues to this day. The residents here will hold grand birthday celebration activities in front of the temple every birthday, including several nights of magical operas and incense-burning to repay the gods. The atmosphere is quite lively.
