Ho Tung Library

The Ho Tung Library was built in 1894. The original owner was Mrs. Kouny. Sir Robert Ho Tung, a wealthy businessman, purchased the building in 1918 as a villa for summer vacations. After Sir Ho Tung passed away in 1955, the building was converted into a public library. In 1958, the library was officially opened to the public. The building has three floors. The first floor is a reading room. The second floor is the ‘Ho Tung Library Collection’, which is elegantly furnished. The precious armchairs, marble tabletops, and ancient books and rare editions on the four walls exude the atmosphere of a traditional Chinese study. The building also has a spacious front yard and back garden. The entire building offers both the convenience of being in the city and the pleasure of being in a secluded garden. A new four-story building with modern advanced facilities has been built on the side of the library’s back garden. The new building uses a glass exterior wall that is conducive to lighting and integrates with the surrounding beautiful environment, allowing readers inside the building to feel a strong Sino-Portuguese cultural atmosphere. The total area of the two buildings is more than 30,000 square feet, and there are more than 400 seats. Here, the rules of general libraries prohibiting eating and reducing noise are broken. The building is divided into areas where eating and reading are allowed, and areas where readers can freely chat are also set up. After reading, you can also go to the audio-visual area to enjoy music and movies. Opening hours: Open from 8:00 to 20:00 from Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year; Open from 14:00 to 20:00 on Monday throughout the year. Tips for visiting: The library is divided into an old area and a new area. The main building of the old area is a garden-style building. The main color of the building is a bright and generous light yellow, supplemented by white lines as decoration. The unique four-sloped roof is paved with red tiles, giving it an ancient and elegant feeling. The old building is famous for collecting classical Chinese literature and historical books, including literature and history books from the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. Many of these books are already precious unique copies.
