Sanjie Guild Hall

Built in 1750, Sanjie Guild Hall is located in the former bustling district known as ‘Rongning Fang’, hence the inscription ‘Rongning Society’ on the altar in front of its entrance, along with the couplet ‘Prosper in a peaceful and happy environment, enjoy a tranquil and peaceful year’. The temple is relatively small and nestled among the towering buildings of the city, bearing witness to the changes in the lives of the local residents. Inside the temple, Guan Yu is enshrined with exquisitely carved statues. Initially, the guild hall was a place for merchants to discuss matters and held an important position in the local area. The ‘three streets’ refer to Yingdi Street, Guanqian Street, and Caodui Street, which were the ancient commercial centers where all merchants gathered to conduct trade. Later, due to the establishment of the Guan Yu Temple and the God of Wealth Temple, the number of worshippers increased, and commercial activities ceased to take place here. It gradually lost its original function and became a temple. Every year on the fourth day of the fourth lunar month during the Drunken Dragon Festival, many people gather in front of the Sanjie Guild Hall to catch a glimpse of the dancing dragons, either finding a good spot for a better view or setting up their tripods to prepare for photography. On the thirteenth day of the fifth lunar month, which is Guan Yu’s birthday, a bamboo shed is built in front of the Sanjie Guild Hall to serve as a stage for performing divine operas. Apart from these lively days, the Sanjie Guild Hall returns to its peaceful appearance. The hall is open all year round from 9:00 to 18:00, with the actual business status subject to the day’s opening. A must-see travel guide is a small temple with only three rooms, sandwiched among various churches and Western-style buildings in Macau, hidden by the hustle and bustle of bicycles and motorcycles outside. The hall contains many Chinese murals and enshrines Guan Yu, representing a typical Chinese architectural style.
