Ya Po Ching Square

The Portuguese meaning of Ya Po Ching is ‘mountain spring’. It used to be the main water source of Macau, hence it was an early settlement point for the Portuguese in Macau. The former Portuguese-style buildings are still preserved, facing the grand mansion of Zheng Guanying, a famous modern Chinese thinker, reflecting the characteristic of peaceful coexistence of two distinct cultures, Eastern and Western. To preserve the cultural features of this area, a series of renovations have been carried out. The two hundred-year-old banyan trees in Ya Po Ching Square have been retained, classical street lamps have been added, and the pavement has been replaced with marble. Nearby, there are valuable buildings such as the A-Ma Temple, Zheng’s Mansion, and the Church of St. Lawrence, which are part of the ‘Historic Centre of Macau’. The area is open all year round and is accessible 24 hours a day. A must-see guide for visitors: Ya Po Ching was once the main water source of Macau and one of the earliest Portuguese settlements. A Portuguese folk song says: ‘Once you drink the water from Ya Po Ching, you can never forget Macau; either settle down in Macau or leave and never return.’
