Changchun Shrine is located not far from the entrance of Taroko Gorge, housing the spirits of 212 employees who died in the construction of the Cross-Island Highway. The architecture of Changchun Shrine adopts the Tang Dynasty style, embedding itself into the mountain wall according to the terrain. Fresh springs gush from the mountain wall, forming a waterfall. This waterfall splits in front of Changchun Shrine and flows into the stream, known as the famous ‘Changchun Waterfall’. Together with the classic and elegant temple building, a landscape garden like a traditional Chinese painting is presented before your eyes. Behind the shrine, there is a winding stone staircase of 380 steps, commonly known as the ‘Heavenly Ladder’. At the end of the climb, you can reach the Guanyin Cave, which contains a stone statue of Guanyin and a complete map of the Cross-Island Highway construction. Opening hours are 8:30-17:00 all year round. Essential tips for visitors: 1. The geological strata in this area are unstable, prone to rockfalls and landslides, so please pay special attention to the surrounding environment during your visit. Do not enter if there are signs of rockfalls. 2. The staircase from Changchun Shrine to Taroko Tower is steep and difficult to walk on, made of cement, and can be slippery when wet due to its north-facing side and rainy weather, so be careful with your steps. 3. Those who are not feeling well or have heart conditions, please consider carefully before walking on the steep ladder section (Heavenly Ladder).
