Near Lingdong University of Science and Technology in Nantun District, Taichung City, there exists an old residential area known as ‘Caihong Juancun’, which annually attracts visitors from around the globe. A retired soldier named Huang Yongfu, out of boredom in his later years, took up painting and used the alleys and streets of the residential area as his natural canvas. He adorned them with various beautiful rainbow lines and adorable animals. The bold use of colors, cute compositions, and childlike charm have made visitors feel as if they are in a rainbow world, hence the nickname ‘Caihong Juancun’. Huang Yongfu is affectionately referred to as ‘Rainbow Grandpa’ by many. Numerous photography enthusiasts and young artists come to this place to take pictures and remember the moment. The alley at the entrance of the village, stretching for dozens of meters, is where Rainbow Grandpa has painted the most and is also the liveliest area. Mr. Huang Yongfu’s home is located in this alley and is easy to find, as his front door is covered with notes left by tourists, filled with blessings such as: ‘Rainbow Grandpa, your creations have given this ordinary residential area extraordinary colors’, ‘The paintings are so beautiful, please continue to color our world’. Rainbow Grandpa occasionally comes out of his home to take photos with visitors upon request. He doesn’t mind if tourists, tired from their journey, push open his door to visit his old house of over ten square meters. Although the house is not large, the walls are covered with dozens of cartoon characters and animal shapes. His bed is adorned with various woodblock prints, and on the table, there are various watercolor brushes, brushes, and paper. Painting has become a habit in Huang Yongfu’s life; he paints every day and will continue to do so. The village is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
