Shiqiu Ridge Tunnel

The Shiqiu Ridge Tunnel, also known as the Liu Mingchuan Tunnel. The tunnel with a south-low and north-high topography is 235 meters in length. It belongs to a third-class historic site in Taiwan and is the only tunnel in Taiwan that has been rated as a historic site. Liu Mingchuan, the governor of Taiwan during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, was committed to building Taiwan. In 1887, he was approved to establish the Taiwan Railway Business Administration. In the railway project, the Shiqiu Ridge Tunnel was extremely difficult to construct due to hard rock in the north and wet and soft soil in the south. Many British and German engineers were even hired as consultants. Finally, the first railway tunnel in Taiwan was successfully excavated. Open all year round and all day.
