Shengping Theater: A Historic Landmark in Jiufen

Originally named ‘Shengping Zuo’, Shengping Theater was established in 1934 along Jiufen Old Street. This two-story, vintage theater building, which features the popular Baroque Revival style of the time, has become a renowned attraction in Jiufen. Upon entering the theater, one can see a commemorative stamp placed next to the old ticket window, allowing visitors to make their own keepsake. Inside, the wooden seats that once accommodated six per row have been reconfigured to seven or eight, reducing the total number of seats to over 200. The additional space has been converted into an exhibition area. The theater houses a carbon arc film projector, an antique piece left from the past, and the concession stand displays a vintage refrigerator, which required the insertion of ice blocks into an iron cabinet for food refrigeration. Notably, Shengping Theater served as the primary filming location for Hou Hsiao-hsien’s movie ‘A City of Sadness’. The promotional board at the entrance still displays the movie posters from that era, and after many years, seeing the yellowed and blurred posters with Tony Leung’s youthful face gives a surreal sense of time travel. The theater is open all year round from Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
