Lin Yutang’s Former Residence is located on the hillside of Yangming Mountain, which served as Lin Yutang’s home during his lifetime. The architecture is primarily based on a traditional Chinese quadrangle compound, with blue glazed tiles complementing the white-washed walls, and deep purple rounded window frames, creating an elegant and refined ambiance. Upon entering the residence through its main gate, one is greeted by a courtyard that blends Eastern and Western styles, surrounded by railings covered in lush greenery and featuring several ancient towering trees. Passing through the cloister, one arrives at the central courtyard, where a small artificial hill adorned with bamboo, maple, ferns, and vines houses several colorful koi fish swimming in a pond. Beside the pond lies Mr. Lin Yutang’s study, furnished with a modest desk, and through the two windows in front of it, one can admire the rugged stones and a tall gardenia tree. The study is equipped with a black sofa, black and yellow wooden flooring, and a warm desk lamp, all original pieces that can be photographed but not with flash. Adjacent to the study is Mr. Lin’s bedroom, which contains only a single bed due to his consideration for his wife’s sleep, leading to them sleeping separately most of the time. Beyond the bedroom lies the living room and dining area, furnished with vintage tea tables, sofas, tableware, and dining chairs. Among them is an oval-shaped dining table of his own invention that can be extended, with each chair back engraved with a small seal script character for ‘phoenix’, symbolizing the deep affection between Mr. Lin and his wife. The study walls are adorned with numerous calligraphic works and paintings, including the four characters ‘You Wei Zhi Zhai’ written by Mr. Lin himself, and a painting of orchids by Soong Mei-ling. Additionally, a painting of ‘Galloping Horses’ by Mr. Lin is also displayed. The residence is open to the public throughout the year from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
