Honglu Mountain: A Scenic Pilgrimage and Hiking Destination

Honglu Mountain, also known as ‘Nanshijiao Mountain,’ is located in the mountainous area behind Nanshijiao in Zhonghe District, New Taipei City. It stands at an elevation of 302 meters and is home to numerous temples, making it a popular pilgrimage site for believers. The mountain’s beautiful scenery also attracts many hikers and nature lovers. The mountain range extends to the eastern end, with a flat and open summit offering excellent views, especially overlooking the Taipei Basin, Dahan and Xindian rivers, and the distant Guanyin and Datun volcanic groups, as well as the Tamsui River estuary. Honglu Mountain is also a famous tourist spot for viewing the night scenery in the Greater Taipei area. There are two entrances to Honglu Mountain: the first is a set of stairs next to the parking lot, which leads to the Nanshan Fude Palace after climbing over a hundred steps; the other entrance is a short walk along the road from the parking lot. However, due to limited parking spaces at the summit, most vehicles are parked halfway up the mountain. Walking straight from Xingnan Road, you will first arrive at the Wenchang Emperor Temple, a center of faith for those seeking academic and professional success. Behind the temple, stone steps lead to the Nanshan Guanyin Temple, which worships the main deity Guanyin Bodhisattva, along with Manjushri Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. It is a common resting place for hikers. Continuing to walk upwards, you will reach the Jingnangong Xiandong Temple, with its resplendent golden appearance and a towering 109-foot statue of the Earth God, a landmark of Honglu Mountain. Climbing the stone steps next to the statue will lead you to the Nanshan Fude Palace.
