Haimen Tianxian was constructed during the First Opium War between China and Britain in 1840 to prevent British invasion. It was rebuilt by Liu Mingchuan, the first governor of Taiwan, after being damaged during the Sino-French War in 1884. Located along the mountain roads of Ersha Bay, it is also known as the ‘Ersha Bay Battery’. Haimen Tianxian was strategically built to take advantage of the terrain, with two batteries positioned to guard the outer sea and the inner harbor entrance, situated on higher seaside hills, while the lower land facing the sea served as the barracks. Within the battery area, one can observe cannons and ammunition storage facilities; the barracks area retains several sections of walls and a camp gate inscribed with the four large characters ‘Haimen Tianxian’. It is open to visitors all year round, with full-day access.
