Located in Taichung, Gaomei Wetlands may not be expansive, but it boasts a variety of habitats including muddy and sandy beaches, tidal streams, and grasslands. This diversity supports a rich array of wildlife, particularly during the winter months when numerous migratory birds flock to the area to escape the cold, making it one of the wetlands’ most spectacular sights. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the imposing sight of two rows of wind turbines, their massive blades turning gracefully in the wind, creating an awe-inspiring vista. The intersection of eco-friendly energy generation and wetland scenery unexpectedly creates a new beautiful landscape — as the sun sets, these giants stand on the horizon, their silhouettes reflected on the water’s surface, merging with the渐变的 orange, pink, and purple sky, a sight truly experienced only at Gaomei Wetlands. The shallow waters of the mudflats allow for a clean and odorless exploration on foot, with occasional splashes of muddy water reaching the ankles. Besides migratory birds, the wetlands are home to various fish and crab species. The ‘tidal stream area’ offers opportunities to observe the spawning and hatching of migratory fish, the ‘slow flow area’ provides a nurturing environment for fish fry, and the ‘mudflat area’ is a peaceful coexistence zone for mudskippers and hermit crabs. For those who enjoy cycling, the Gaomei Bicycle Trail offers a scenic ride from the sea wall to the wetlands. Although the path is somewhat rudimentary, it is flat and poses no significant cycling challenges. After sunset, linger for about 30 minutes to witness the coastal road alongside the wind turbines light up with street lamps. The wind turbines become the main attraction once again, with the yellow lights extending beneath them, reflected on the water’s surface, creating a view that is no less captivating. Opening times are all year round, with the site being open all day. Essential tips: 1. Check the weather forecast; if the clouds are too thick, the sunset view will be obscured. If the sun is out for long periods, remember to apply sun protection. 2. Since there is only one lane leading to the wetlands, traffic congestion is common as the sun sets. 3. It is advisable to carry minimal belongings and wear flip-flops for easy removal, as walking on the wetlands requires barefoot access. 4. The wind in the wetlands is strong, and the temperature is relatively low; bring a jacket to stay warm and avoid visiting in winter. 5. During high tide, the end of the walkway near the sea can be dangerous; exercise caution.
