Yinshan Temple: A Historic Shrine to the Guardian Deity of Hakka People

Yinshan Temple, located in Tamsui, was established in the third year of the Daoguang Emperor’s reign during the Qing Dynasty (AD 1823). It is dedicated to the guardian deity of the Hakka people from the Tingzhou region in Western Fujian, known as ‘Dingguang Buddha’. Apart from being a sanctuary for Dingguang Buddha, Yinshan Temple also serves as a gathering place for fellow villagers from Tingzhou, known as the Tingzhou Guild Hall. Presently, only two temples in Taiwan, the Tamsui Yinshan Temple and Changhua Dingguang An, worship Dingguang Buddha. Despite undergoing several reconstructions, the temple has made great efforts to preserve its original appearance. The exterior carvings, paper-cuttings, and clay sculptures are all exquisitely crafted, reflecting a high level of artistry. The temple houses numerous ancient relics, with the statue of Dingguang Buddha being particularly valuable. The temple is open to visitors from 7:00 to 17:30 all year round.
