Sforza Castle is a renowned fortress in Milan, and one of the city’s most famous attractions. It once served as the residence of the Sforza family, who ruled Milan. The castle spans a vast area with towering walls, exquisite courtyards, and numerous rooms, offering a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the Sforza family during their reign. Now functioning as a museum, it is divided into several sections, housing the Museum of Ancient Art, the Museum of Furniture, the Museum of Musical Instruments and Applied Arts, and several other museums, with a vast collection that can only be superficially explored in half or a full day. If time is limited, visitors should not miss the masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci’s ceiling painting ‘The Room of the Boards’ and Michelangelo’s sculpture ‘Rondanini Pietà’, created just days before his death. Both are must-see exhibits in the museum. After touring the museum, one can take a break in the Parco Sempione behind the castle, an ideal place to enjoy a delicious Italian ice cream while strolling or find a bench under the shade trees to enjoy a picnic-style lunch, experiencing a more laid-back side of Milan. The castle is open all year round from 07:00 to 19:30, while the museum’s opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30, with ticket sales ending at 16:30 and the last entry at 17:00. The museum is closed on Mondays, and on December 25th, January 1st, and May 1st. The castle’s courtyard is open from 07:00 to 19:30.
