Basilica di San Marco

The Basilica di San Marco is the second largest cathedral in Milan, originally constructed in the 11th century and dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice. Initially built in a Gothic architectural style, the cathedral underwent significant transformation in the 17th century, adopting a Baroque style which is the appearance we see today. The exterior of the church is constructed with dark red bricks, lacking the delicateness of French architecture, but upon entering, one is surrounded by art. The interior boasts numerous precious murals, which are well worth the visit. In the early 1770s, the young Mozart stayed here. On May 22, 1874, Verdi’s ‘Requiem’ was premiered here to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the poet and novelist Manzoni. The opening hours are from Monday 08:00-12:00 and 16:00-19:00, and Tuesday to Sunday 08:00-19:00 throughout the year.
