The Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio was built between 379 and 386. The early name of the church was the Basilica of the Martyrs. It was built by Saint Ambrogio. He also built three or four other churches around Milan. He himself is buried here. The crypt of the church buried many saints. However, due to multiple renovations of the church, the location can no longer be found. After multiple renovations and reconstructions, the church took on the Romanesque style of the current church in the 12th century. The nave, two corridors and the semicircular apse of the church remain the same as at the beginning.
