It is a well-known Buddhist organization in Taiwan and is regarded as one of the four major Buddhist mountains in Taiwan
Every year, Dharma Drum Mountain recruits many people from society to promote educational and charitable work and holds many Buddhist lectures and activities, thus becoming a great place to study Buddhism
The predecessor of Dharma Drum Mountain is the Nung Chan Monastery and the Chinese Buddhist Cultural Center established by Elder Dongchu
The Nung Chan Monastery was planned and constructed in 1971
It mainly focuses on meditation and makes a living by farming
In 1975, it was named Nung Chan Monastery
At that time, Elder Dongchu was committed to promoting Taiwan’s Buddhist culture and cultivating Buddhist talents
He also held winter relief activities every year
In 1977, Master Sheng Yen succeeded as the abbot of the Chinese Buddhist Cultural Center and the Nung Chan Monastery
In addition to inheriting Elder Dongchu’s aspirations, he also transformed Buddhist teachings into concepts and spiritual cultivation methods that the public can understand, accept and apply, and then carried out promotion work
Subsequently, due to the increasing number of believers and students of the Nung Chan Monastery and the Chinese Buddhist Institute, in 1989, a piece of land in Sanjie Village, Jinshan Township, New Taipei City was purchased by chance
Master Sheng Yen named it ‘Dharma Drum Mountain’, so the organization named after ‘Dharma Drum Mountain’ was established
Dharma Drum Mountain has the ‘Dharma Flower Bell’
Every year during festivals, grand bell-ringing activities are held here
The beginning of Dharma Drum Mountain – the Chinese Buddhist Cultural Center is located on Guangming Road, Beitou District, Taipei City
It regularly holds the ‘Medicine Buddha Disaster-Relieving Dharma Assembly’ and the ‘Avalokitesvara Disaster-Relieving Dharma Assembly’ every month
And in the Chinese New Year and July respectively, a three-day ‘Thousand Buddhas Repentance’ and ‘Ksitigarbha Dharma Assembly’ are held to enable people living in downtown Taipei to understand the profoundness of Buddhism nearby
