Yidao Shao is a settlement of the Shao ethnic group, which has long resided beside Sun Moon Lake, formerly known as Dehua Society
Many people associate Yidao Shao with just a wharf by Sun Moon Lake, but in reality, across the lakeside highway, there is a Yidao Shao combined housing tribal area, which also serves as the entrance to the Shueisyan Mountain Trail
Yidao Shao Main Street is a culturally rich district in the Sun Moon Lake area, with streets lined with craft shops and specialty stores
At the entrance to Shueisyan Mountain, the simple exterior walls of the combined housing tribal area are adorned with Shao stories, creating a unique charm
The Deer Chase Market: Upon arriving at the Yidao Shao tribe, one can easily feel the authentic Shao culture
The Deer Chase Market, named after the legendary white deer from Shao tribal tales, is located in the southern part of the Yidao Shao wharf
Harvest Festival: The Shao tribe’s annual rituals include the Sowing Festival, Weeding Festival, Hunting Festival, Eel Worship Festival, and Harvest Festival
Every lunar August is the time for the Shao’s Harvest Festival
If there is an elected chief priest, a month-long ‘Great New Year’ is held; if not, a four-day ‘Small New Year’ is celebrated
During the ‘Great New Year’ Harvest Festival, the entire tribe participates in various ceremonies such as pounding stone sounds, worshiping ancestral baskets, arm-rubbing prayers, tooth-filing ceremonies, building ancestral spirit houses, and welcoming the Sun and Moon shields for blessings
It is believed that the Shao ancestors originated from Alishan, where they discovered a large white deer in the mountains and chased it over hills and ridges to Sun Moon Lake
They found the lake to be abundant in fish and beautiful in scenery, and thus settled down beside it
The Lalu Island in the lake became their ancestral spirit land, and Shueisyan Mountain also became a sacred mountain
Open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day
