The National Museum of Prehistory in Taiwan is located in Taitung City
It was established on August 17, 2002
It is an outdoor museum built on archaeological sites on the spot, abbreviated as ‘Prehistory Museum’
This museum was mainly established to rescue the Peinan Site in Taitung
In July 1980, during the construction of the South-Link Line of the Taiwan Railways Administration and the Peinan Station (now Taitung Station), the Peinan Cultural Site containing a large number of cultural relics was accidentally excavated
At present, the museum is divided into three major themes to display different kinds of cultural relics, namely Taiwan’s natural history, Taiwan’s prehistory, and Taiwan’s Austronesian ethnic groups
The museum is not directly built on the archaeological site
Instead, a Peinan Cultural Park is built separately to preserve the site
The architectural design of the Prehistory Museum was selected after an international competition
The architect is Michael Graves
The entire museum area is about 10 hectares
The museum is on the east side and the cultural park is on the west side
Opening hours: Open all year round, Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 – 17:00
