The Confucius Temple in Tainan was built in 1665

It is only supported by the row beams outside the thick wall

The side halls on the east and west worship other ancient sages
The annual ceremony to worship Confucius is held in the square of the Confucius Temple
On the day of the ceremony on September 28 of the Gregorian calendar every year, the mayor of Tainan presides over the ceremony and conducts it according to ancient rites
The atmosphere is solemn and the ceremony is grand
The ancient trees beside the temple are lush and winding, evoking a sense of nostalgia
Among the exhibits in the Confucius Temple, there is also an authentic plaque with the words ‘The First School in Taiwan’
There is no signature and it is unknown who wrote it
Under the plaque is the statue of Chen Yonghua, the military advisor
It was this gentleman who persuaded Zheng Jing, the son of Zheng Chenggong, to ‘establish a Confucius Temple and build a school’
He has been praised as ‘the advocate of education in Taiwan’ by later generations
This Confucius Temple is also the first institution of higher learning built after Zheng Chenggong recovered Taiwan
In the early Qing Dynasty, it was the place where all schoolboys in Taiwan entered school
Therefore, it is called ‘The First School in Taiwan’
