The Fangqiao School Establishment Stele is located in the campus of Banqiao Primary School
It is more than three meters high and 165 centimeters wide
It was built by the Lin family, a prominent clan in Banqiao, in 1908 (the 34th year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty)
The famous Japanese calligrapher Higashisaku Kusakabe was invited to write the inscription
It has been rated as a third-class historic site
The inscription records in detail the deeds of the Lin family in Banqiao setting up a book club, free school and donating land to build a public school
They have made great contributions to the local area and benefited many students
It is also a witness to the evolution of Daguan Free School, public school and Banqiao Primary School
Unfortunately, the current inscription has been damaged by anti-Japanese people
At present, only the five characters ‘Fangqiao School Establishment Stele’ are left on the top of the stele
