The Anping Tree House, originally the office and warehouse of the British merchant Teck Guan Trading Company, was constructed at the end of the 19th century
As the warehouse was abandoned, the surrounding lush banyan trees began to encroach, with their roots gradually tearing apart the original structure and their trunks becoming the main support of the brick walls
After half a century, the trees and the building have merged into one, creating a unique spectacle where ‘walls are within trees, and trees are within walls’
At the end of 2004, the tree house was renovated and wooden walkways were planned, allowing tourists to explore the interior of the tree house through these pathways
Upon entering, one is greeted by the hanging aerial roots of the banyan tree, with light filtering through the foliage into the building, creating a dappled interplay of light and shadow, full of charm
The Anping Tree House is now covered with green banyan leaves, providing a cool and refreshing experience during the summer
The ‘Kuroneko’ ice cream served inside is quite tasty
After visiting the Anping Tree House, one can also pay a visit to the adjacent Teck Guan Trading Company for a historical tour
Open all year round from 8:30 to 17:30, the service facilities include wheelchair access
