Wugong Temple

Wugong Temple is located in the urban area of Haikou, serving as a historical site that showcases the culture of ancient Chinese exiled officials, Hainan’s historical culture, and the ancient architectural art with Hainan characteristics. The temple was built in memory of five historical figures who were exiled to Hainan Island during the Tang and Song dynasties, hence the name Wugong Temple. It is a meticulously constructed red building made of superior wood, featuring two levels and a four-pointed roof, adorned with plain tiles and red beams, which, together with the lush greenery surrounding it, creates an atmosphere of solemnity and reverence.

Upon visiting, one should start from Sugong Temple. To the left of Sugong Temple lies Wugong Temple, where five distinguished officials are jointly worshipped. The main building of Wugong Temple is a red building made of superior wood, standing several meters tall. Inside the Xuepuxiang Hall, there are treasures of the temple, including a Ming Dynasty bronze bell, a Qing Dynasty iron bell, and three large iron cannons.

Next, one can visit the Guanjia Hall to ‘trace their roots and inquire about their ancestors’, where it is revealed that the ancestors of Hainan people mainly came from Fujian and Guangdong provinces. To the right of Sugong Temple, there are two Fubo Temples, where Han Dynasty Fubo General Lu Bode and Eastern Han Dynasty Fubo General Ma Yuan are worshipped. Both generals had successively conquered Lingnan, establishing nine counties including Qiongyao and Zhan’er.

Opposite Wugong Temple is the Haikou Museum, which is connected to the temple. Originally the Wugong Temple Exhibition Hall, it displays a limited number of exhibits, including the biographies and works of some famous Hainanese figures, which can be visited along with Wugong Temple for those interested. The site is open all year round from 08:00 to 23:00. 1. Daytime: 09:00 – 18:00 (entry stops at 17:30); 2. The historical and cultural area closes after 18:00 and is not open; preferential policies for children: under 1.2 meters (not included), free during the daytime; 1.2 meters (included) and under 18 years old (not included) with their ID, discounted during the daytime; senior citizens: 60 years old (included) to 69 years old (included) with their valid ID, discounted during the daytime; 70 years old (included) and above with their valid ID, free during the daytime; undergraduate (included) and below students: with their valid student ID, discounted during the daytime; veterans: with relevant certificates, discounted during the daytime; active-duty soldiers: with valid ID, free during the daytime; disabled people: with valid disability certificate, free during the daytime.
