Naozhou Island, formerly known as Mang, is an island formed by volcanic eruptions at the bottom of the sea about 200,000 to 500,000 years ago. It is also one of the leading volcanic islands in China. It is located about 40 kilometers southeast of Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. It is adjacent to Donghai Island in the north, Leizhou Bay in the west, the South China Sea to the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean in depth. The total area is about 56 square kilometers. Naozhou Island is one of the ‘Eight Scenic Spots of Zhanjiang’, known as ‘Ancient Charm of Naozhou’. It is an island outside the island of Zhanjiang City. It has beautiful scenery and pleasant climate all year round. There are many historical sites on the island, including Nayan Sea Stone Beach, a famous tourist resort in the south; there is also a very ideal natural bathing beach; and there is Naozhou Lighthouse, one of the world’s three famous lighthouses on a par with the lighthouses in London and Cape of Good Hope. Historical sites include: the ruins of the Song imperial city, Xianglong Academy, Octagonal Well, Song imperial stele, Song imperial pavilion, Song imperial village, Chima village, as well as the tomb of Dou Zhenbiao and ‘Gongbao Square’. Open all day and all year round.
