Bao Family Garden, located 6 kilometers west of She County, is the private garden of the Qing Dynasty Huizhou merchant Bao Qiyuan, a descendant of Bao Shuya, known for his friendship with Guan Zhong. The garden boasts rockeries, ponds, pavilions, and towers, all spacious and grand, with green vegetation covering the area, creating an excellent environment.
The garden is particularly famous for its nearly ten thousand meticulously trimmed potted landscapes, each a work of art. Among them, a 200-year-old banyan tree known as ‘South Country Charm’ is considered the ‘Treasure of the Garden’. Additionally, there is a museum within the garden that exhibits bonsai, wood carvings, and root carvings.
The Bao Family Garden Hotel, which complements the garden’s style, features a garden-style courtyard and rooms decorated in a classic, antique style. The ticket for Bao Family Garden is combined with the ticket for the nearby Tangyue Memorial Archways, priced at 100 yuan, and cannot be purchased separately. Guests staying at the hotel can visit the garden for free, but to visit the Tangyue Memorial Archways, an additional 100 yuan ticket is required.
Tangyue Memorial Archways, just 500 meters away from Bao Family Garden, are a must-see to justify the expensive ticket. The seven archways stand side by side across the rural path, exuding a sense of grandeur. In April, when the rapeseed flowers bloom, they add a touch of liveliness to the scene. Next to the archways, there are two ancestral halls, Dunben Hall (Bao Family Male Ancestral Hall) and Qingyi Hall (Bao Family Female Ancestral Hall), dedicated to the Bao family. The female ancestral hall is particularly special, being the only one in the country, built specifically for the virtuous and heroic women of the Bao family through the generations.
