Chaohu Lake is traditionally known as one of China’s ‘Five Great Freshwater Lakes’, alongside Dongting Lake, Poyang Lake, Taihu Lake, and Hongze Lake. It is a cradle of China’s ancient civilization, and Chaohu City is uniquely named after the lake.
Rows of willow trees, as thick as bowls at the base, line the lake embankment, their slender branches swaying in the autumn breeze, creating green waves; below the embankment, aquatic plants such as iris, water chestnut, and yellow iris flourish, resembling an emerald ribbon that winds into the distance; further along the water’s edge, reeds with interspersed green and yellow sway, while white egrets either soar into the sky or circle low… This is the delightful scenery of the ‘man-made wetland’ seen at the Shuangqiao River section on the north bank of Chaohu Lake.
