Dahongyan Scenic Area

The Dahongyan Scenic Area, together with the nearby Qingfengzhai and Liuxiu Long, is collectively known as the ‘Danxia scenic spot’. It is a relatively concentrated and magnificent Danxia landscape in central Wuyi. The huge vermilion cliff of Dahongyan and the Danxia caves of different sizes and depths in the mountain are also very eye-catching. If you plan to climb mountains and enjoy the scenery in Wuyi on weekends, then Dahongyan is a highly recommended choice. The footpath in the scenic area is circular. Except for two relatively steep steps, other parts are easy to walk and there is no need to retrace your steps. Tourists can walk the whole way, or take a sightseeing car from near the Taiji Pond in front of the gate to the mountaineering entrance (10 yuan/person), and then walk clockwise for sightseeing. There is also a relatively close footpath in the sightseeing car section, which can be completed in about 20 minutes. There is a bamboo corridor at the place where you get off the sightseeing car. At the end of the bamboo corridor is a fork in the road. On the right is the nearly two hundred steep steps of Tiantangling. Even young people will be out of breath when walking up. Elderly and weak tourists can also take the gentle slope on the left to go up the mountain, which is much easier. Near the Yingjia Pavilion on Tiantangling, there is a fairly large viewing platform. Standing here and looking into the distance, the overlapping mountains in the distance form the shape of a lotus flower, and the middle one is the lotus core. The large and small caves on the steep cliff are clearly visible, which is the classic landscape of Dahongyan. Continuing forward, along the way are successive tunnel-like caves. People endow them with many legends according to the characteristics of these caves. For example, the famous Reading Cave is a low cave with huge space inside. It is said that when Emperor Liu Xiu of the Eastern Han Dynasty was in distress, he read scriptures here. Now there are many stone tables and benches inside for people to rest. The adjacent Wukong Cave is more interesting. Tourists can walk into the big cave and stick out their heads to take pictures through the small holes on the rock wall, which has a certain sense of déjà vu of Sun Wukong sticking out his head when being pressed under the Five Finger Mountain. After passing the later Fanyin Cave, Guanyin Cave, and Shuangyan Cave (nearby there is Shuangyan Temple where you can view the scenery from afar), and then climbing up a section of steps, you will reach Niubi Cave. This is also the higher place that tourists can reach. After that, it is all downhill. Niubi Cave is divided into left and right caves. When you crawl through the cave and look back, it really looks like a cow’s nose. On the way down the mountain, passing through Qingfeng Cave, through the dense pine forest of Qingsongling, and then walking down the steep steps comparable to Tiantangling behind the West Heavenly Gate, you can see the vermilion side of Dahongyan. In the later journey, as you go down all the way along the steps, the lofty red cliff of Dahongyan accompanies you all the way. The scenery is very shocking. The aerial plank road at Mo’er Rock (Danxia Gallery) offers a particularly good angle to see Dahongyan. The large number of paired trees in the mandarin duck forest behind have a somewhat romantic atmosphere. And the Liuxian Lake at the foot of the mountain and the cliff of Dahongyan reflect each other, adding a bit more vivid temperament to this scenery.

If you come to Dahongyan in autumn, the large areas of lavender, cosmos, and lilies at the foot of the mountain are in full bloom, and the photos taken are colorful.

If you want to go to Qingfeng Stronghold or Liuxiu Long, you can also transfer to a bus heading in the direction of Liucheng and Yuyuan after arriving at Wangzhai. However, the scenery in these places is more or less the same and not as spectacular as Dahongyan.
