The Eighteen Steps

The Eighteen Steps is the first of the five stone wells on the ancient street. It is said that when Emperor Qianlong traveled to the south of the Yangtze River, he passed through Xuancheng and drank water here. Below the well, two stone lions guard a square ancient well made of bluestone. A small stone arch bridge divides the water usage: drinking water above the bridge and washing below the bridge. The well water is clear and sweet, never running dry all year round. It flows from the pool to a small river outside the street, and then merges into the Shuyang River.
