Taizhou Museum is a comprehensive museum primarily dedicated to the collection of historical relics, housing nearly ten thousand pieces of various artifacts, with a particular focus on ancient calligraphy and paintings, Ming Dynasty costumes, and Six Dynasties celadon. The collection of ancient calligraphy and paintings is vast, including works by renowned painters such as Lu Ji, the court painter of the Ming Dynasty, Lan Ying, the founder of the Wulin School, Dong Qichang, Wen Zhengming, Zhang Chong, Tang Zhiqi, Xie Shichen, Wu Bin, Cheng Sheng, and Zhang Feng. Additionally, the museum boasts works from the Qing Dynasty by artists like Zhu Da (Badashanren), Shi Tao, Yun Nantian, Fei Danxu, and Lianxi, as well as the Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics, including Zheng Banqiao, Huang Shen, Li Jie, and Wang Shizhen. Works from the Jinling School, such as Cai Ze, and those from Qing Dynasty notables like Liu Yong, Lin Zexu, Tie Bao, and Li Hongzhang, as well as modern artists like Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Chen Shicheng, and Yu Youren, are also well represented in the collection.
The museum’s collection of Ming Dynasty costumes is one of the most concentrated and well-preserved collections of civilian textiles from that era, especially silk fabrics, which represent the better civilian attire of the mid-Ming Dynasty. In terms of ceramic collections, the museum has a significant number of fine pieces from the Six Dynasties celadon to porcelain from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The museum also houses many distinctive collections in other cultural relics, such as one of the world’s only complete male Kang Deer fossils, a Han Dynasty bronze mirror with mythical beast patterns, hundreds of pieces of the Forbidden City archives, Qing Dynasty transportation archives, and Qing Dynasty handicrafts.
Opening hours are from 09:00 to 17:00, Tuesday through Sunday, all year round; the museum is closed all day on Mondays; on Mid-Autumn Festival, it is open from 09:00 to 18:30; and on National Day, it is open from 09:00 to 18:30.
