Tangli Ancient Village is a dazzling pearl scattered on Taihu Lake. It is located in the front courtyard of Shuiyuewu on the southern slope of Piaomiao Peak, which stands like a tripod in Wuzhong. Bathed in the warm sunshine, tourists from home and abroad stroll among it and feel the historical vicissitudes of the ancient village with a history of thousands of years. For thousands of years, with great changes, there are still more than 20 Qing Dynasty residence buildings such as Renbengtang (Xishan Carved Flower Mansion), Rongdetang, Qinyuantang, Shudetang, Chongdetang, Libentang, Legengtang, etc. in Tangli. Among them, Renbengtang, Qinyuantang and Rongdetang are in better preservation conditions. Renbengtang is relatively large in scale. Built in the fifth year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty, it covers an area of more than 2000 square meters. Its brick carvings on the gate tower and wood carvings on the window lattice are second to none in Suzhou in terms of smooth lines, beautiful patterns, lively shapes and fine carvings and high artistic value. As for the building with more beautiful shape, it is Rongdetang. Its halls are surrounded by verandas. The levels of the ancient residential courtyards in Tangli Ancient Town are deep or shallow, high or low. The courtyard scales are large or small, and the patterns are long or wide, thus producing undulations and rhythm. Especially the residential buildings from the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty have very prominent local styles. They can not only be reflected in the architectural images created by the exquisite brick-wood structure technology, but also in the architectural space conception, fully reflecting the special space consciousness and aesthetic concepts of the people on Xishan Island. The buildings here reflect cultural concepts such as adapting to local conditions, space change, group combination, light and shade, false and true, folk customs, and even ‘Confucianism makes people calm in the world, and Taoism makes people calm in nature’.
