Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Wu of Liang, the Jade Emperor sent four immortals to visit the earthly paradise in Jiangnan on a boat of incense, intending to build a palace. On their way through the waters of Xizha, they were captivated by the enchanting scenery and pleasing beauty. Three of the immortals disembarked to gaze upon the view, and the boat, as if relieved of a great burden, prompted the boatman to exclaim, ‘These three gentlemen are like stone Buddhas.’
