The Inorganic Pit, located on Xishan Island in Suzhou, witnessed large-scale mountain quarrying for stone extraction in the latter half of the last century. After 2000, local authorities gradually closed the quarries and began the process of greening the barren and unsightly stone mountains.
Year by year, the vigorous vegetation and the rainwater bestowed by nature have transformed the scars left by mountain quarrying into another type of beauty reminiscent of the Grand Canyon, a rugged kind of landscape.
