Xue’s Residence, constructed in 1926, is located on the north side of the narrow West Street, covering an area of approximately 350 square meters. It is a typical commercial and residential building in Xitang, facing the street and adjacent to the river. Xue’s Residence is characterized by its light, simple, and bright design, contrasting with the traditional preference for darkness as a symbol of wealth. All windows are equipped with glass, adorned with floral patterned bars, which are visually pleasing.
The entire residence is made of brick and wood, with two main sections. The front section, facing the street, consists of four rooms in a straight line, three to the east and one to the west. The currently open eastern three rooms serve as the main entrance, with counters on both sides offering souvenirs and antiques. The walls of the front section of Xue’s Residence are about 6 meters deep, and the construction method and structure remain traditional. The roof features a gable design, but it is much taller than that of ordinary residences. Among the residential buildings of this period in the entire Xitang town, it stands out significantly.
The rear section is the main hall, with a small courtyard between the front and rear sections. The courtyard is tiny, with narrow side rooms on either side, resembling a corridor. These side rooms have long glass windows, offering a view of the courtyard. Thanks to the glass installation, the lighting is much brighter than in traditional houses. The main hall is divided into three rooms, with square bricks on the floor, central supporting pillars, and a long door blocking the back half. Crossing the threshold leaves half a room, leading to the river. To the right are the staircase and kitchen, with a compact structure. The main hall is connected to the two side rooms, resembling two tiger’s feet. It is open all year round from 8:00 to 17:30, with specific business hours subject to daily opening conditions.
