Two Turtles Listening to the Dharma Stone

Located to the west of the Pan Tuo Stone and at the lower end of the Fifty-Three Participants Stone on the cliff, there is a huge rock with two attached rocks that resemble turtles. One is stretching its limbs and feet as if climbing up; the other is perched on the top of the rock, looking back, as if urging the latter to hurry up. The two turtles are lifelike and exquisitely crafted, which is truly astonishing.

It is said that the two turtles were sent by the Dragon King to eavesdrop on the teachings of Guanyin Bodhisattva, but became so engrossed that they forgot to return and were turned into stone by Guanyin Bodhisattva. There is also a legend that the two turtles were originally a male and a female, who, due to their unfinished worldly affairs, flirted with each other during the dharma session, hence they were punished to become stone turtles as a warning to those who are not sincere in their practice.

Above the Two Turtles Listening to the Dharma Stone, there are the Fifty-Three Participants Stones, with the larger ones standing upright like a hundred feet tall, and the smaller ones piled up like eggs, arching and supporting each other, arranged in a staggered and disordered manner. Not only do they have different shapes and forms, but they also change appearance with every step, giving people a sense of danger. As the weather changes from morning to evening, and with the transformation of mist and haze, these strange rocks also present different shades of color. Open all year round, accessible 24/7.
