Paramount, full name ‘Paramount Grand Hotel Ballroom’, was built in 1932 and officially opened on December 14, 1933. For a time, it was a gathering place for influential people and celebrities. The neon lights flashed and jazz echoed. A continuous stream of dancers came and went. The genius movie star Charlie Chaplin visited twice accompanied by Mei Lanfang. The patriotic general Zhang Xueliang often lingered here. The legendary couple Chen Xiangmei and Chennault chose this place as their engagement location. Famous singers of that era such as Zhang Lu, Bai Hong, Zhou Xuan, and Gong Qiuxia showcased their voices and competed in beauty here. In 2013, the renovation of Paramount officially started, taking three years and costing 120 million yuan. The renovation work follows the principle of’restoring to the old as it was’. Referring to a large number of historical and cultural materials, it retains the charm of Shanghai ballrooms in the 1930s. Now, Paramount shines again. Not only is its exterior extremely magnificent, but even its interior is sumptuous. Huge crystal chandeliers, spring wooden floors, classic glass dance floors… All those high-class scenes that can only be seen in old movies can be reproduced. On the second floor, there are private rooms named after eight famous singers. Each one has a different style and is extremely magnificent. There is also the Chaplin Round Hall, the Young Marshal’s glass dance floor, and the round hall for General Chennault and his wife Chen Xiangmei. The third floor is a nostalgic grand ballroom with the style of Shanghai in the 1930s. There is also an international dance standard dance floor, which is retro and classic. The reopened Paramount has restored some of its signature entertainment items at that time. Performances such as tea dances, banquet dances, and jazz can be enjoyed here. Opening hours: Open all year round from 14:00 to 22:30.
